Hi there, I’m Patricia Owens (she/her). I am a wearer of many hats, among them: helper, partner, mama, daughter, friend and registered psychologist.
Let’s focus on the last one. I’m glad you’re here. Often, reaching out and seeking support, is the first, if not hardest step. Good job! I’ve always had this visualization of well-being or personhood if you will. It is not rooted in science, but something that was told to me as a small child. Here it is: we all have a light that shines within us. This light is the essence of our being and it burns bright. At times, life challenges and stressors cause our light to flicker. When we are faced with complex challenges, like trauma, addictions, or emotional and/or mental stress, that light can become covered. Caked in mud, if you will. The more challenges, the more layers. The light is still there, but it’s hard to see.
My goal, is to partner with you to peel back the layers and allow your light to shine bright again. I have over 15 years of experience in the mental health field. I have worked in the criminal justice system and directly in the mental health field, helping adolescents and adults navigate complex mental health, trauma and addictions. I have a Master’s in Counselling Psychology and am a Registered Psychologist in the province of Alberta.
My professional interests and experiences include working with people who struggle with trauma, perinatal mental health, birth and reproductive trauma, postpartum challenges, addictions, mood disorders (depression, anxiety etc), disordered eating, grief/loss, life changes and transitions.
I am informed in my practice by my education, clinical training, current evidence-based research, and my own experiences with parenting and life challenges. My approach to counselling is deeply trauma-informed and attachment-based. I draw from a variety of modalities, including narrative and solution-focused therapies and cognitive-behavioural therapy. On a personal note, as a Mama of two (very busy) young boys, I know how overwhelming the transition to motherhood is and how exhausting parenting can be. Parenting can be an incredible privilege and at times, an incredible struggle. That light that I spoke about earlier, can begin to be obstructed as everything becomes about the baby/child. We cannot pour from an empty cup and I believe that it is so important that we take care of, and nurture the parents and caregivers.
Let’s connect and help your light shine bright again. Oh, and babies are welcome. :)
